PTA Advocacy
What is Advocacy?
Anyone who speaks for another is an advocate. PTA is an advocate for children and their families on a wide variety of child-related issues in the areas of education, health, well-being, and parent involvement. The purpose of advocacy is to communicate to decision makers to inform, educate, persuade or increase the level of awareness about an issue. Decision makers include elected and appointed officials, legislative bodies, school boards, School Based Decision Making (SBDM) Councils, and judges.
PTA: A Voice for All Children and Youth
Children can't vote. Lawmakers, whether they serve in state legislatures or the U.S. Congress, listen to voting blocks. Because children cannot vote and are therefore not heard, PTAs across the country exist as their voice. Whether they are trying to ensure children are immunized against disease, have access to a quality education, or protected against school violence, PTA members make themselves heard - everychild.onevoice.
On the Local Level - You can make a difference:
The Temecula Valley Council PTA Advocacy Committee passionately seeks to positively impact the lives of all children and families by actively working with local PTA members and elected officials to make our community, county, and state the best it can be. Some of the current local issues we're tackling are:
- Adequate and timely emergency medical care for Temecula Valley residents.
- Reinstatement of the "D" letter grade at the high school level.
- Research on and letter of of concern regarding Liberty Quarry.
- State-mandated, full-day kindergarten with age 5 requirement date of September 1st.
- No-cost pre-kindergarten to better prepare children to meet state educational standards.
- General student safety.
Do you have an issue that you need to speak out about? Want to help tackle the tough issues? The TVC PTA Advocacy Committee meets monthly, usually on a Monday night. Please CONTACT THE TVC PTA ADVOCACY COMMITTEE if you would like more information or would like to participate.
